FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

www.FAFSA.ed.gov

What is the FAFSA?

The FAFSA is the application all students must complete in order to be considered for any type of federal financial aid. It is not optional if you want to be considered for federal financial aid.

When should I complete the FAFSA?

Students should complete the FAFSA in January of their senior year, as soon as their parents/guardians have filed their taxes (you will need to use their tax information). There is no deadline in North Carolina, but colleges often have deadlines so itis important to check with the financial aid offices at your colleges of choice. The sooner you complete the FAFSA, the better. Do not wait until April or May, because financial aid is finite and usually runs out each year. You will likely have more financial aid opportunities if you apply early (i.e. January or early February).

Which website should I use to fill out the FAFSA?

You should use FAFSA.ed.gov- it is 100% free to use. You should never have to put in your credit card information in order to file a FAFSA. If it asks you to, you're probably on the wrong site. Do not fall into the trap of using"FAFSA.com" or "FAFSA.net" because they are for-profit businesses andwill charge you to complete your FAFSA. The correct site is FAFSA.ed.gov and it is 100% free to use.

What is the FAFSA4caster?

It is a free financial aid calculator that helps families plan ahead. By providing some basic information, theFAFSA4caster will estimate your eligibility for federal student aid. It is recommended that families use this prior to senior year, and even asearly as middle school. The FAFSA4caster can be accessed here.

What is a PIN?

Your PIN is a Personal Identification Number that you must use to sign your FAFSA electronically. It is basically a security measure that identifies you as you. Click here for more information on PINs.
