To-Do List for Freshmen

College Planning - Freshmen & Sophomore Night

College Planner: Amanda Dworsky

  • Get involved in the Upper School! Explore and participate in extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, community service projects, summer experiences, etc. Remember quality is better than quantity - find a few things you enjoy and stick with them. Create a file and start a list of the following (update each semester): awards, honors, athletics, club and community involvement, paid/non-paid jobs, job shadowing/internships, service projects, volunteer work, etc.
  • Take your studies seriously. Set academic goals for the year and create strong study habits. Evaluate your grades each marking period and determine what you are doing well and what you need to improve. Attend extra help sessions. Remember that you are building your record for college admission beginning in your freshman year. Challenge yourself by taking honors courses in subjects that you are strong in and enjoy.
  • Practice time management skills and learn to effectively balance your academics with extracurricular activities and other life obligations
  • Attend the Freshmen College Planning session in fall and encourage at least one of your parents to attend as well. An overview of the planning process is provided.
  • During second semester, meet with your College Planning AP to discuss your four-year academic and extracurricular plan.
  • Set-up your Naviance account and explore colleges. Find out about college entrance requirements for colleges you are interested in.
  • Sign up for a college savings account if you haven't already.
  • Explore career options and think about what you might want to do as a career.
  • Go on college tours NOW. Physically being on the campus does more to tell you about "fit" than anything and gives you a better idea of the end-goal.
